Being well prepared is critical to providing appropriate care for SIMS Medical Center™ patients. As you will see next under "What the patients can do," SIMS patients are very life like. They can react and can speak.  Expect at times, to have conversations with some of the patients.  One day they may feel like talking, another day they will not be responsive.  Remember to at all times, treat each Center patient the same way you would a patient at a "real" clinical site.

When you are assigned to a patient care unit:

- you will be video recorded as part of the evaluation process.
- always treat each patient as though you were in a medical facility.
- never refer to a SIMS Medical Center™ patient as "dummy" or "maniken."
- ask ahead of time where equipment and supplies are located.
- read all assignments related to the patient condition.
- if you are uncertain of a required skill, ask for practice time to increase your comfort level.
- bring all the same references and equipment as you would to an outside medical agency
- NO food or drink is allowed in any patient care area.
- NO ink pens or other similar marking devices | Pencils are provided
- do NOT bring your back pack or similar item(s) into a patient care area.
- wear your uniform and name tag.  A different name tag may be provided for certain events.
- be aware that you and the patient are being video recorded.  Information recorded may be used to determine if your actions were appropriate for the patient condition.
- if you are unsure if a certain procedure can be performed on a patient, ask a professor for assistance or use the work area phone to call for assistance.
- professional behavior is expected at all times.

Any student who does not follow the above rules will be removed from the clinical experience.
